Dorie Clark is a marketing strategy consultant, professional speaker, and frequent contributor to the Harvard Business Review. Recognized as a “branding expert” by the Associated Press, Fortune, and Inc. magazine, she is the author of Entrepreneurial You (Harvard Business Review Press, forthcoming on October 3, 2017), Reinventing You, and Stand Out, which was named the #1 Leadership Book of 2015 by Inc.
Dorie, whom the New York Times described as an “expert at self-reinvention and helping others make changes in their lives,” consults and speaks for a diverse range of clients, including Google, the World Bank, Microsoft, Morgan Stanley, the Ford Foundation, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and Yale University.

- [0:47] Dorie Clark writes Business Books. She’s also a part-time teacher in Duke’s Fuqua School of Business – Duke University.
- [1:32] Dorie originally thought she’s going to Academia.
- [1:43] Wanted to get a PhD but turned down by every program she applied to.
- [1:55] She was a political reporter for a year and worked on a political campaign after she was laid off.
- [2:28] Being a non-profit Executive Director, she ran a bicycling advocacy and during that time she realized how to run a business.
- [2:57] After a couple of years, Dorie opened her own business.
- [3:48] She likes reading books and always dreamed of writing her own.
- [4:01] In 2009, she decided to start writing her own book. In the 1st six months of the year, she wrote 3 different book proposals which were all rejected by publishers because she doesn’t have a big enough platform.
- [4:52] Dorie created her own fan-base by blogging and in 2011 she got her 1st contract for her book “Reinventing You”
- [6:09] “If you hit a roadblock of any kind, people do one of two things: there’s the “blame out” response and the “blame in” response..”
- [9:37] The first place that Dorie was able to break-in and blog for was the Huffington Post.
- [10:25] At the end of 2012, she wanted to blog for more publications. She made a spreadsheet of about 2 dozen publications she wanted to write for and started researching how she will be able to reach out to them. Only 3 got back to her and only 1 accepted her to be a contributor.
- [13:01] “If you’re only making money one way….it’s a little risky”
- [13:40] Today, Dorie earns money in 7 different ways.
- [16:10] She had created 3 online courses.
- [17:00] In the past year, Dorie had brought in about $220,000 from online courses.
- [18:39] “It’s always essential to understand who your customers and to listen for what they’re asking for”
- [20:43] Dorie shifted from PR Consulting to Marketing Strategy which enable her to do more with social media.
- [21:26] Writing her book “Entrepreneurial You” was a great experience for her. She interviewed 50 top professionals who made 6 to 7 figures income.
- [26:35] “Sometimes, even tweaking one variable, even just questioning the one thing that everybody knows can really dramatically change the results”
- [30:17] One of the most important philosophies that starting entrepreneurs can take in is really embracing the “lean startup methodology”
- [32:57] “Some people think that entrepreneurship is about risk taking, it’s not! It’s actually about mitigating risks in smart ways”
