Background on John McDonald of Semihandmade:

John McDonald founded Semihandmade in 2011.  The company makes doors that fit Ikea kitchens, bathrooms, closets, and media systems. A former aspiring screenwriter, McDonald started the company in a one-man shop in Duarte, CA. Today, it employs 75 spread over production shops in Southern California and design locations around the country. In 2017, 5000 projects shipped across the US and Canada, and revenue hit $10M. Projected revenue in 2018 is $13M.

Ikea is unique among cabinet retailers in the fact that when purchasing one of their kitchens, doors are optional. Homeowners comprise 80% of SH’s business, with the other 20% coming from Contractors, Architects and Designers. A typical customer buys the cabinet boxes and interior hardware such as drawers and hinges from Ikea, then comes to SH for the doors, drawer fronts, panels and trim ordered through an easy-to-use online shopping cart. Material choices include everything from paintable Shaker and MDF doors to colored thermofoils and real wood veneers. Upgrades include custom bookcases, decorative hardware, floating shelves and appliance panels.

Semihandmade has been named to Inc. Magazine’s fastest-growing private US companies list each of the last four years. The company will be moving into a 30,000 square-feet campus in Monrovia, CA in spring 2019.
