Background:

Our Second Patreon Group Call! It was an Open Meeting with your host Austin Peek of Entrepreneur Stories 4 Inspiration (aka Millionaire Interviews Podcast) and my guest Eric Gilbert-Williams of EGW Coaching  (check out Episode 104 for his backstory).  Even though he's a “Business Coach”, I invited him on cause he actually run his own business. Something that most “Business Coaches” can't say – unfortunately.  Anyhow, this was an open session where Patreon Members asked us anything…

Want to know more about Eric Gilbert-Williams?  Well, he moved to Calgary, Alberta in 2006 to capitalize on Alberta’s then booming economy by starting a construction company. In the early days it was about knocking on doors and swinging a hammer to get work done by himself. As time went on he hired staff and generated compounding growth for the company until in 2014 his company was recognized as the #1 fastest growing company in Calgary as per the Growth 500 list, at this point with several million dollars of annually recurring revenue and a team of 60 people.

In 2018 the time was right to sell and Eric did just that. Since then he has been travelling the world, developing software, helping tech startups learn ‘brick and mortar’ business basics and mentoring small and medium sized businesses scale and grow.

Time-Stamped Show Notes:

  • [1:27] Eric: is currently in California doing angel investing and is interested in shifting to the tech industry.
  • [8:04] David: based in South Africa, he runs an outsourced live chat service. His business is self-funded and he didn’t like the idea of being funded by angel investors.
  • [15:36] Austin: points out to David an episode in Millionaire Interviews on the topic of how to expand to the US market.
  • [20:26] Eric: believes that sometimes an accelerator group is an advantage but sometimes it can be a bad fit.
  • [27:06] David Dixon: is in the carpentry and contracting trade and he has a couple of questions towards Eric regarding setting prices and choosing the best customers.
  • [33:28] Eric: talks about the fear of taking risks in business.
  • [36:22] Raine: chimes in and offers his ideas and insights on the issues being talked about by Eric and the other guests.
  • [40:10] David: agrees with everything that Raine said to him. He is 50 years old, aims to retire at 65, and wants his business to succeed so he can sell it in the future.
  • [42:55] Austin: writes down what is being done each day. It’s like a self-assessment of what you’re doing now.
  • [45:15] Bren: had a business coach that didn’t work out.
  • [47:35] Eric: gives his own version of an ideal business coach.
  • [49:16] David: recommends the book E Myth Revisited by Michael Gerber, which would answer all of Bren’s questions.
  • [50:27] Eric: is obviously missing the Tim Horton’s coffee.
  • [57:00] Bren: he runs a gutter business but he doesn’t love it and he is planning an exit. His biggest issue is the employees.
  • [1:00:24] Raine: asking the group if they’re watching The Profit. He loves the show.
  • [1:06:40] Erica: met two tech guys in the group call and they were able to help in developing a demo for her app.
  • [1:09:35] Eric: shares 3 stories that are related to Erica’s app development.
  • [1:13:57] Austin: starts this podcast because he wants to help entrepreneurs and introduce them to genuine people.
  • [1:19:42] Eric: enumerates several businesses and ventures he was involved with through the years.

Key Point from Group Call 002:

  • Eric: “I always believe that a good coach is busy doing real business. And they have a few clients on the side. And that to me is… you gotta practice what you preach.”
