P48: A Family's Innovative Product in Air Purification… w/ CEO of Molekule – Jaya Rao
Video & Audio of Our Call:
Background:
Jaya Rao is the CEO and Co-Founder of Molekule, a San Francisco-based science and clean air company that has developed a fundamentally new approach to cleaning air. As opposed to current air purifiers that attempt to filter the air, Molekule is a new generation of air purification that uses nanotechnology to break down and destroy pollutants at a molecular level.
As a child, President & CTO Dilip Goswami suffered from debilitating asthma and allergies. Frustrated with the lack of available remedies for Dilip’s conditions, his father Dr. Yogi Goswami turned to science to address a key culprit: dirty indoor air. Through 25 years of intense scientific research, Dr. Goswami and his research team created a new breakthrough purification technology: PECO (Photo Electrochemical Oxidation), the technology now powering all Molekule air purifiers.
Seeing the role that science played in her brother Dilip’s life, and experiencing the effectiveness of the technology herself, Jaya was also inspired to share PECO technology with the world. Together, the pair of Stanford-educated engineers co-launched Molekule in 2014. Now they, along with the entire Molekule team worldwide, are on a mission to harness the power of science to improve lives and solve some of the world’s greatest problems, beginning with indoor air pollution.
Time-Stamped Show Notes:
- [2:00] Jaya has a brother who was suffering from severe asthma and allergies. This prompted her father to look into air purification using his experience in solar groundwater technology.
- [3:37] It took her father many research and iterations of the technology to improve it further through the years.
- [6:29] Destroying pollutants in the air is what differentiates Molekule from other air purification products in the market today.
- [9:48] Big corporations coming in and helping innovators get their technology into the masses or making their inventions a reality is a phenomenon that Jaya has seen worldwide.
- [11:38] Her mom and brother worked to get the license and patent for the Molekule technology.
- [13:58] When Molekule was just starting, Jaya wasn’t involved because she was focused on other things.
- [15:08] There are government grants that are looking for entrepreneurs who can commercialize and market these innovations and technologies.
- [17:47] The air purifier technology that her father created was able to treat Jaya’s severe migraine. This was the moment when she changed her view of what her father was working on.
- [24:52] In the early days, Jaya and her family wanted to license their technology to other big companies and let them commercialize it and handle the business side of it.
- [28:17] Being frustrated with the views of the big companies toward the Molekule technology, Jaya committed herself fully to the business.
- [30:03] In 2015, Jaya and her brother applied to a hardware incubator called Highway One and they came out of it with a prototype of their technology.
- [35:04] After getting the funding and were ready to mass-produce the product, they looked for the right manufacturers to support them.
- [37:19] The pre-order launch and the selling of the product was a learning experience for Jaya.
- [40:00] Several factors helped Molekule truly get off the ground and get them through the issues in the beginning.
- [46:17] According to Jaya, it is much cheaper to manufacture in Florida compared to California.
- [52:08] She is hoping to do much more in the future in terms of science and technology innovations.
- [56:27] Jaya has a very inspiring final message for everyone.
